Nick and Joanne

Nick & Joanne O’Neill welcome you to ‘Food at Jigger’s the restaurant with arguably the best views in the Lakes, panning the picturesque Derwent water and surrounding mountains and fells. A walker’s paradise – a camper’s haven.

Your new hosts are no strangers to the wants and needs of the hungry traveller, having spent previous seasons running the illustrious Ullswater Yacht Club Catering kitchen enduring unprecedented floods during 2009, a time of immense frustration and cost – yet, the club became the UK’s number one Yachting club. WELL DONE ALL!!

Although Catering has arrived quite late on the O’Neill’s CV, history will show a passion and understanding for food from a very early age by simply watching Grandparents back in Yorkshire make ‘Owt from Nowt’ as they would put it! Back in the day, making good food from basic and pure ingredients was second nature, often growing or rearing produce in meagre back garden plots where nothing was wasted, such was the necessity for value and quality – this ethos was in turn passed along the line from Mother to child until the old was combined seamlessly with the new.

Joanne’s Nan, the industrious Connie Lawton baked from the heart for her local Church, selling all manner of cakes and pies at the bazaar and often selling out before other traders had polished the first penny, such was the demand for good home baking – her afternoon teas were etched in folklore, or at least miners snap tins.

After a long spell as an award winning giftware sculptor for Lilliput Lane in Penrith, Danbury Mint in New York and finally Elvisly Yours in London. Nick decided it was time for a change, Joanne agreed and what begun as a hobby soon became a career.
